Stephen J. "Deets" Guttman, 92, of Northampton, passed away on Monday, December 27, 2021, in Fellowship Manor, Whitehall. Born on February 7, 1929, in Northampton, he was a son of the late Rudolph and Helen (Knausser) Guttman. Stephen was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa (Taras) Guttman. He was employed as a machine operator for GE/Black and Decker for 33 years. He honorably served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Stephen was a standout three-sport athlete at Northampton High School in the late 40s. He had a stint with a Boston Red Sox affiliated minor league team before joining the Army. He coached and was involved with the Northampton Athletic Association (NAA) for over 60 years. For his many years of volunteering and community service, the NAA complex is named in his honor and the multi-purpose room at the Northampton Recreation Center is dedicated in his name. He was a member of Queenship of Mary Catholic Church in Northampton.
Survivors: Stephen is survived by his sons, Stephen J., Jr. and wife, Ann Marie, Michael A. and wife, Jerry Lynn, John D. and wife, Jennifer; 7 grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Spengler. Brothers, Rudolph and John, preceded Stephen in death.
Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 5 th at 10:30 a.m. in the church, 1324 Newport Ave., Northampton. Family and friends may call on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass in the church. Those in attendance will kindly be asked to wear a face cover and practice social distancing. Interment will be in Our Lady of Hungary Cemetery, Northampton. Online condolences may be offered below.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the church or the Northampton Athletic Association c/o Reichel Funeral Home, 326 E. 21 st St., Northampton, PA 18067, in loving memory of Stephen.
