Obituary

Howard “Howie” Lerch Jr., 78, of Northampton, passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, following a battle with cancer. Born on September 30, 1948, he was the son of the late Howard Lerch Sr. and Pauline (Newhard) Lerch. Howie retired after a long career with Keystone Auto Parts (LKQ Corporation).

A lifelong Eagles fan, Howie’s greatest passion was racing. For more than 60 years, he served as a crew member for Beers Motorsports, creating legendary memories along the way. He began crewing for Dale Beers during the Dorney Park days and continued as the team traveled to racetracks up and down the East Coast along with some pit stops to fun places such as Florida’s Disney World. Like Howie’s infectious smile, no cars at the track shone brighter than those he worked on.

Howie was a longtime supporter and the current Vice Commander of Squadron 353 of the Sons of the American Legion in Northampton. He often helped at the organization’s events, especially those benefiting children. To the kids, Howie was like Santa Claus.

Howie will be deeply missed by his brother, Keith Lerch of Northampton, and his extended family: Eric Beers and his wife, Cherie, and their children, Austin and Kailyn (Jack Ely); Lori (Beers) Kerper and her husband, David and their children , Shaye, Justin Bunce and his wife, Chelsea, and their children, Nolan and Taytum; Bobbi Jo and Greg Martin and their son, Owen; Brennen Coutler, Beaner, Bev Scherer, several cousins; and his longtime friend, Adam Marinkovits.

Family and friends may gather on Tuesday, October 20th, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Reichel Funeral Home, 326 E. 21st St., Northampton. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be private. Online condolences may be offered below.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sons of the American Legion in Northampton through the funeral home.
