Frank A.
Micek
Jun 9, 1930 — Mar 4, 2023
Frank A. Micek (June 9, 1930 - March 4, 2023), from Allentown, PA, was the son of the late Andrew and Elizabeth Micek and was predeceased by his wife of more than 68 years, Francine Micek, along with his brothers, Andrew Jr., Joseph, Charles, William, and Edward. Frank and Francine had eight children: Frances Gilbert (Paul), Constance Medve (Pete), Michael Micek (Michele), Marie Micek, Lisa Micek, Judith Voytell (Kenneth), Catherine Parks (Steven), and Geraldine Halper (John), 16 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Frank, nicknamed Fero, grew up in what was known as Allentown's 6th Ward within a large Slovak community. He attended church and grade school at St. John the Baptist Slovak Catholic Church, then Allentown Central Catholic High School, where he played baseball and football. Central Catholic was also where he met Francine.
During the Korean War, Frank was a United States Marine Corps sergeant, a military policeman, and a Marine Corps baseball player. He graduated from Muhlenberg College with a bachelor's degree in psychology. Frank worked at Sears Roebuck and Co. as a major appliance salesman for many years, was named "Top Salesman" for several years, and retired in 1992.
Frank was an enthusiastic Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles fan. He was proud of his Slovak language and heritage and was a lifelong member of Jednota First Catholic Slovak Union. Everywhere he went, he saw someone he knew or forged new friendships.
Frank's greatest lifetime impact was his devotion to his family. When his then two-year-old daughter, Marie, became gravely ill and emerged from a coma with severe disabilities, doctors assured Frank and Francine she would never walk again. Through sheer determination, Frank guided her through physical therapy and eventually had her walking once more. He could be found every day thereafter taking Marie for a walk in the local parks with one of his loyal German Shepherds at his side. By his example, he taught his children and grandchildren about resourcefulness, selflessness, perseverance, humor, and love.
